Online security best practices today include:

  1. Choosing a strong, unique password – in general, longer passwords are more secure (see below about using a password manager with multi-factor authentication).

  2. Using a password manager to keep your passwords safe in one place.

  3. Switching on Multi-factor Authentication to add an extra layer of security – our recommendation is that you use an authenticator app to receive your passcode.

  4. Using up-to-date Anti-Virus Software.

  5. Activating a pop-up window blocker, which may also include adjusting the settings to allow pop-ups from trusted websites and sources.

  6. Regularly scanning your computer for spyware.

  7. Only downloading programs and clicking links from known and trusted sources.

  8. Keeping your devices and apps updated – updates aren’t just about adding new features, they’re also about fixing vulnerabilities.

  9. Being cautious about using a public WiFi network, as insecure WiFi networks can allow other people to see your data.
